Must Read! Knew This Would Happen!

Read, and then I'll post my comments at the end:

New 'Lost' Episode Hits a Ratings Low
Feb 15, 6:19 PM EST

The Associated Press

"Lost" crashed in the ratings this week, hitting an all-time low for a new episode. ABC's drama about plane crash survivors stranded on a mysterious island drew an estimated 12.8 million viewers Wednesday, according to preliminary figures from Nielsen Media Research. That's well off the peak of more than 20 million for the drama that became an instant sensation when it debuted in September 2004.

ABC has worked hard to try to protect a show that helped turn the network's fortunes around, moving it to 10 p.m. EST Wednesday this year to steer clear of Fox's blockbuster "American Idol" and CBS's increasingly strong "Criminal Minds."

After "Lost" fans complained about reruns interrupting the show's serial flow last season, the network tried an experiment: It split the current season in two, airing six episodes before an extended break and then resuming with 16 additional episodes.

The show's Feb. 7 return was heavily promoted and drew nearly 14.5 million viewers. But the bounce didn't last, with the show slumping this week.

Although protected from top-rated "American Idol" in its new time 10 p.m. time slot, "Lost" now has the disadvantage of trying to draw viewers at an hour when fewer people are watching television. This Wednesday, Valentine's Day put a 7 percent dent in overall TV viewership.

In the show's defense, ABC noted that it beat the competition among the advertiser-favored young adult crowd, drawing 7.3 million viewers age 18 to 49 compared to the 5.8 million that tuned in to CBS' "CSI: New York."

"Lost" also handed ABC nearly 4 million more viewers in the time slot compared to last year, when short-lived drama "Invasion" aired, the network said.

But there's no question that "Lost," once riding big ratings, buzz and cachet, has lost significant ground.

Some fans and critics complain that the story has gotten confusing and unsatisfying. The show, named best drama at the 2005 Emmy Awards, was shut out at the 2006 ceremony.

The Big Debate: "Lost" vs. "Survivor"

I knew this was going to happen. It was a very disappointing episode. I think the problem is that ABC did not think the show all the way through, which is why we kept getting repeats. Then, to take off for 13 weeks in a new season, showed me that they were not really ready for a new season and didn't have a storyline prepared. It is also becasue of this that good shows like Daybreak and the Nine also failed. People didn't want a substitute show for Lost, show they left ABC and never came back to watch the Nine, so both of those shows failed. Now I know we are only two shows into the second part of the season, but it does seem that they are headed in the direction I said they would go - less mystery and more drama. The Producers also gave the lame answer that the Losties paths all connect just because they do. That was in another article I read. I'm going to still watch, but I don't anticipate it getting any better.

they have to have reruns because the show must end at a certain point in the year. which means, there needs to be a certain number of repeats

It was explained to me by FEEDYOURHEAD about the show polling and the advertising revenue that comes from that which all dictates the time slots and the season schedules.

We the viewers, most importantly, our complaints about the re-runs, put abc into a spin and onto the wrong line of thought.
But we are not totaly to blame.
Abc and the money-mongerers want to milk the cash cow.. But now the cow is drying up.

Bad scheduling and even worse off the cuff script writing had left us dazed and confused.
They cannot hope to gain new viewers without those same going out and buying the complete seasons so far and doing cath-up.
But they won't do that cause they see the show as far to confusing at the point of joining in.

Starting a new season and then showing 6 eps with a mini-cliffhanger and then taking another break almost as long as the between seaon break is really what killed the show.
We were given far too much time to analyze the show so far and also to discover other good shows also being broadcast.

This show will end soon. It has to.
They run the risk of total shut-down without a conclusion if ratings continue to drop. Which is what will happen untill they get back to the original storyline.
Will there be any viewers left before they reach that stage?
Just a thought.. they need to tie up all the loose ends before the end of the next season and give us an ending to be proud of.
If not the cash-cow will be dead and served up on a cold plate.

well just because ratings are down - doesn't neccesarily mean they are poor

I believe it it still at least one of ABC's most popular shows

prolly with Grey's and Housewives

and prolly still one of the high-er rated shows in general

tho I do agree that the 'hiatus' prolly worked against the show ratings wise - I wouldn't be surprised if they pick up again with allnew episodes being shown for four months straight

yea you did. just can't remember the name for it at the mo..

Well anyway .. a drop of 6 million people is bad.
This season is reported to become the worst season yet.
While offering tantalizing glimpses into the OTHERS lives and weird brainwashing techniques, it dosen't add to the original storyline.
They know it to.
They have promised to get back on track, but when? How will we know?
Too many good questions and so many pityfull excuses for explanations (That really only confuse more) will leave people overwhelmed with the possible outcome of soo many diverse individual story arcs.
They really need to start tieing these together, lead us to an idea that things are starting to make sense. In other words, Give Us Hope that there really is an all-unifying plot that ties everything together.

It's a big task that I would not even want to tackle in their shoes.

It's too bad about the ratings for ABC, but personally I don't care what the ratings are. Actually, I think it may be a good thing the ratings decline. If the ratings were to increase, it would compel ABC to keep the show going longer than planned. This would ultimately lead to a very watered down plot.
There is a lot of complaining about unanswered questions. Yes, there are many aspects of the show we don't understand yet. To me, that's what makes it interesting. In many instances, I believe the viewers don't accept the "answers" given by the writers. We demand that every detail is fully explained in a scientifically correct mannor. What other show is subject to this type of scrutiny? This is television, and it is fiction. 24 is a very successful show, yet if you really look into the script, storyline, writing and acting, you find a show that is full of holes and unanswered questions. Everyone wants to know who's x-rays Juliet and the guy from MB were looking at. Does it matter? Maybe, maybe not. So far, I've read that it may be Clair, or Juliets sister, or Sun. Yes, this may be an unanswered question, but it may also be a question that does not need to be answered because it has no bearing on the plot.

I strongly disagree about the last episode being poor. I thought it was exceptional.
